British and Chinese cancer centres team up
The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center established its first international partnership last week with a Chinese Cancer Center. Officials with the Shanghai First People's Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center in Shanghai made a stop over in the UK to make the agreement official.
The two cancer centres will collaborate on treatment and prevention research and will offer exchanges for each centre's specialists.
"This ceremony marks the beginning of new collaborations and interactions with our sister cancer center in Shanghai and demonstrates the enlarging global influence of the Markey Cancer Center," said the UK centre's director, Dr. Mark Evers.
Shanghai First People's Hospital, which is affiliated with Shanghai Jiatong University, specializes in gastrointestinal cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer treatment.
Evers and UK's executive vice president for health affairs, Dr. Michael Karpf, signed the agreement with Dr. Liwei Wang, director of the Shanghai cancer center, and Dr. Guohua Liu, the hospital's president.
